RESEARCH BRIEF

The word menopause simply means a pause in menstruation; however, it is not a precise moment in our reproductive lives, but rather a process. There are four stages in this process and each has its own physical manifestations.

Premenopause: The term premenopause ideally refers to a woman on the cusp of menopause. Her periods might have just started getting irregular, but she does not have the classic symptoms of hot flashes or vaginal dryness as yet. A woman in premenopause is usually in her mid-to-late forties.

Perimenopause: As a woman progresses on the path of menopause, her cycles may become wildly erratic and she may begin to experience hot flashes and vaginal dryness. This phase can last an average of four years; two years prior to her last period, and two years following the last period. The average age for this phase if fifty-one. The term perimenopause refers to women who are experiencing the height of menopause symptoms.

Menopause: The term menopause actually refers to the final menstrual period. This cannot be determined until a year has passed without a period. After more than one year of no menstrual periods, any vaginal bleeding is now considered abnormal.

Postmenopause: This term now refers to women who have been free of menstrual periods for at least one year. Postmenopause is now the term used to describe the cycles for this time of life.
